Surf Photo Contest Timeline and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

2023 TIMELINE

SUBMIT PHOTOS – all month from Friday, May 5 at 10:00 a.m. *PT through Friday, June 2 at 5:00 p.m. PT.

VOTE – Selected judges will be invited to submit their votes all week, from Monday, June 5 at 10:00 a.m. PT through Friday, June 9 at 5:00 p.m.

PARTY – Winners will be announced in-person at a party on Sunday, June 11, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT at Emerald C Gallery, and online via e-mail, Instagram and Facebook.

FAQs

How do I enter? Submit up to 20 photos that you own by emailing them to Hello@CrownCityPublishing.com.

  • In your email, please indicate if you are entering as a “Professional” or “Amateur,” depending on whether the person who took the photo conducts business for revenue as a photographer.
  • If your photo was not taken in Coronado, please indicate where they were taken in your email or photo file name.
  • RESPOND – expect a response to your email with important information. To be entered in the contest, make sure to follow all instructions in this email.

Is there a fee required to enter? No. However, all entrants will be asked to donate anything they can, with minimum suggested donation of $20 to help with costs.

Can kids enter this contest? Yes, children under 18 years of age are welcome to enter with written permission from a parent or guardian.


Is there a limit on the number of photos I submit? Yes, each entrant can submit up to 20 photos.


Can I submit photos taken outside of Coronado? Yes. If there are enough out-of-town submissions, a separate category will be created and these photos will be voted on, and a winner will be announced for this category.


What photos typically win this contest? Photos taken in the City of Coronado and photos of people and/or animals with some kind of connection to the City of Coronado are encouraged and will be favored in the selection process. This contest is primarily looking for images that somehow relate to surfing in Coronado, and the local surfing community past or present. However, this year will most likely include a separate category for photos taken outside of Coronado.


Can someone help me decide which photos I should enter? Yes, if you’d like to send more than 20 photos, our team is happy to suggest which photos you should enter.


Will I have to sign a photograph agreement? Yes. Our legal agreement has standard terms for us to legally publish your photo in California. All photos submitted have a chance to be published.


Are terms in the photo agreement negotiable? Yes. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about the agreement, and if you’d like any changes made to the agreement. Also be sure to let us know if you have additional terms of use.


How do I know you received my photos? We will respond to your email with important information. So if you do not receive an email response, please call or text (619) 302-2329.


Can I submit a photo that was taken a long time ago? Yes, we accept both past and present photos.


Can I submit a photo on behalf of someone else, living or deceased? Yes, as long as you own the rights to the photo or you have written permission from the person who took the photo, or next of kin of deceased.


Who votes for the winners? Judges are all people with a strong connection to Coronado who are selected by the Crown City Magazine team. Many of our community partners, including City of Coronado employees are selected to be judges and are invited to vote. Judges are not allowed to submit photos to the contest.


Will the judges be able to see who took the photos? No. Judges will only be able to see the photos, and the assigned photo number – the identity of the photographer will be hidden from judges.


How can I vote for photos? You must be selected to be an official judge and invited to vote from the Crown City Magazine team. If you’d like to be a judge, contact us by email or phone.


Is there a cover charge to attend the party happening from 2-4pm on June 11 at Emerald C Gallery? No, this party is open to the public, but please make an effort to RSVP via email or text message:
